Machimus atricapillus (m)
A male kite-tailed robber fly parked on a dead oak leaf in Nannerth Fawr. The name comes from his unusually-shaped genitalia. I usually associate robber flies with the local coastal sand dunes. First time I have come across one of the woodland species.

Heath Spotted Orchid
These pretty orchids pop up in a number of locations around Nannerth Fawr but I was surprised to see them thriving in bracken. Most are various pale shades of purple. Finding the odd white one was a real joy.

Anoplotrupes stercorosus
This is one of the insects working hard to keep Wales clean by burying sheep dung. It's an impressive beetle with hints of iridescent purple and blue on the legs and pronotum. I didn't disturb it by picking it up but if I had I would have seen the underside is all this colour. One wonders why! Photographed in the woodlands of Nannerth Fawr country holidays.

Thistle Forest
This is the latest area of Nannerth Fawr to be planted with deciduous trees in early 2022. At the moment the dominant species looks to be marsh thistle but hopefully in a couple of years the young oak and rowan will grow upwards and shade out the thistles.
