Great Orme Bronze Age Mines
The outcrop of rock, known as the Great Orme, extends out into the sea from the North Wales coast at Llandudno and consists of Dolomitic Limestone in which copper was deposited as copper sulfides millions of years ago. Over many thousands of years that changed into copper carbonates which could be smelted into useable copper metal. Some 28000 years ago the Bronze Age began with the extraction of copper firstly for the simple use of copper and then by combining the copper with tin to produce useable bronze. Around 2200bc Copper was discovered on the Great Orme, which had already been inhabited by humans for many years during the Stone Age, around 1700bc. At first it was extracted by opencast mining but as demand increased underground mining began. Many tunnels at different levels were dug to reach the copper seams in the rock and a large underground chamber was dug out. Both adults and children worked underground in very poor conditions with simple tools. Smelting was done on site. The workers lived in camps close by the mines. Mining took place between 1700bc and 1200bc. The mines were abandoned around 3000 years ago. Copper and Copper xarticles from the Bronze Age mines were found elsewhere in the UK and across Europe throughout the Bronze Age.Although there was some mining for copper on the Great Orme in the 17th and 19th centuries the actual site Bronze Age mines was lost. In 1887 a survey by mining consultants revealed the existence of the ancient mine. In 1990 excavations revealed the actual site of the Bronze Age mines. Whilst work is continuing there is now access to the surface and some access to the underground tunnels is possible.
