S9545 - Sandness
HU191557, LR3. HISTORY Pillar completed 23rd August 1959, cost not on record. Computed by Distomat survey as secondary triangulation station HU46/DM/20 within the Shetlands secondary block, and levelled to second class precision during 1961. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in June 1980. SITE VISIT Westmost pillar on Shetland Mainland. Overall approach from ENE. Parked off the SW side of the A971 at HU207564, just north of the track. Followed the mapped track SW onto Shendale Hill then veered south around the valley of Shen Dale before turning west and making for the main summit of Sandness Hill. Open hill used for grazing purposes. The pillar is in fair condition with chipped apex damage. The column seems to have been constructed off plumb having an off centre spider to compensate. The spider retains an OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. The flush bracket faces SSE compass measurement 158°. Vented through the back (NW) sight hole. The outstanding 360° panoramic view includes Papa Stour, Ronas Hill, Fitful Head, Fair Isle and Foula. Photographed: 25th June 2015, GRP. ═════════════════════════ Interactive index: www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1arx2Qmo5mVeVUJA2lzVG_uzbYPW59ffh&ll=60.285237,-1.655146&z=12" rel="noreferrer nofollow Google My Maps Map: www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/30800609038/in/album-72157692190778971/ Trig Pillars on OS Landranger 3 ═════════════════════════ Neighbouring Triangulation Pillars www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/19384493013/in/album-72157631838876970/ 10465 - Scollan : 3.89 miles to the east. 10511 - Papa Stour : 4.57 miles to the northwest. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/19818790239/in/album-72157631838876970/ 10541 - Neeans : 5.12 miles to the east. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/19382839424/in/album-72157631838876970/ 10540 - Browland : 5.38 miles to the southeast. 10517 - Vaila Isle : 6.53 miles to the south. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/19710772808/in/album-72157631831281682/ S9544 - Culswick Hill : 7.63 miles to the southeast. ═════════════════════════
