10598 - Royl Field
HU395285, LR4. HISTORY Pillar completed 5th October 1959, cost not on record. Computed by Distomat survey as seceondary triangulation station HU46/DM/32 within the Shetlands secondary block, and levelled to second class precision during 1961. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in June 1980. SITE VISIT Overall approach from ENE. Parked in the corner of a large turning area where the public road ends at HU421291. Followed the mapped track network to HU413295 then continued west keeping roughly to the 150m contour until crossing the stream and taking an upward beeline southwest to the summit. Open grazing top. The pillar is in boggy ground but in good condition. The spider has an OS centre cap with raised large wide letters. The flush bracket faces north, compass measurement 7°. Vented through three sight holes the back (south) port is still plugged. The pillar bolt is visible. The full 360° panoramic view includes Foula. Dive bombed by bonxies enroute there and back. Photographed: 23rd June 2015, GRP. ═════════════════════════ Map: www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/30800603448/in/album-72157692190778971/ Trig Pillars on OS Landranger 4 ═════════════════════════ Neighbouring Triangulation Pillars www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/19418645208/in/album-72157631838876970/ 10601 - Veester Hill : 1.57 miles to the southeast. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/19188910393/in/album-72157631838876970/ 10510 - Kettla Ness : 2.80 miles to the west. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/19444773625/in/album-72157631838876970/ 10447 - Helli Ness : 4.04 miles to the east. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/19291770838/in/album-72157631838876970/ 10459 - Burraland : 4.23 miles to the southeast. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/19423807791/in/album-72157631838876970/ 10546 - The Coall : 4.30 miles to the northeast. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/19418692530/in/album-72157631831281682/ S9542 - St Ninians Isle : 4.65 miles to the southwest. ═════════════════════════
