S8688 - Ard Bheinn
NR944328, LR68 & LR69. HISTORY Pillar completed 12th March 1956 costing £85.7s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NS04/T9 within the Isle of Arran secondary block, and levelled to second class precision during 1956. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in October 1978. SITE VISIT Approached from the southwest starting from Bridge Farm (NR926318) where the farmer was welcoming and gave helpful advice on the route. Following the north side of Ballymichael Glen, once through some field gates and onto the open hill, the route is mainly via intermittent quad tracks to the summit. Open grazing top. Chance meet with Brian Robertson (Arran Trigman on TPUK) who voluntarily repaints all seventeen Arran trig pillars annually. The pillar is in fair condition, frost damage to the surfaces but this is now being contained with regular repainting. The spider retains its original OS centre cap with deep indented letters. The flush bracket faces northwest, compass measurement 331°. Vented through the back (SE) sight hole. Full 360° panoramic view. Departed leaving Brian to repaint the pillar. Descended due north to Glenloig (NR945350) on a near direct route which was rough and boggy but manageable. Photographed: 6th Sept' 2014, GRP. ═════════════════════════ Interactive index: www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1arx2Qmo5mVeVUJA2lzVG_uzbYPW59ffh&ll=55.545743,-5.258963&z=12" rel="noreferrer nofollow Google My Maps ═════════════════════════ Neighbouring Triangulation Pillars www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/15182943335/in/album-72157631821839859/ S8686 - An Tunna : 2.49 miles to the northeast. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/17688326510/in/album-72157631821839859/ S8699 - Monyquil : 2.81 miles to the north. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/14924389760/in/album-72157631821839859/ S8720 - Sheeans : 3.35 miles to the east. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/17651603699/in/album-72157631821839859/ S8732 - Torr Righ Mor : 3.68 miles to the west. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/17835018502/in/album-72157631821839859/ S8736 - Lochain : 3.80 miles to the northwest. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/14955474919/in/sex-72157631821839859/ S8733 - Tighvein : 4.70 miles to the southeast. ═════════════════════════
