Maol Chean-Dearg in the mist, Torridon, Scotland
Two weeks hiking in Scotland. By the time we moved north, the weather had turned to more typical West Highlands cloud and rain. Hike 11 took us to Maol Chean-Dearg in the mist. We were supposed to get wonderful views of the Torridon giants, Liathach and Beinn Eighe. Instead we could see just a few metres in front of our steps.

Beinn Alligin beyond Beinn na h-Eaglaise, from Maol Chean-dearg
Day 7. Another view of a summit unattained. ####### For two weeks every May my school took the entire third year of secondary away to locations around Scotland to engage in outdoor pursuits. I spent the fortnight in Torridon, an experience that turned my youthful enthusiasm for hill walking into a lifelong pleasure. The Torridon area has remained one of my favourite locations ever since and I have been back many times, to walk and climb if I can, or just to look if it's all that time allows. Unfortunately, on this first trip in 1977, aged 13, my embryonic photographic interest was equipped only with a cheap Kodak Instamatic camera, and I offer the results here for sentimental rather than aesthetic reasons. I have previously scanned a couple of the original prints made at the time, and these scans from the original negs are scarcely an improvement. They are slightly cropped top and bottom from the almost square format on account of the 35mm film holder on my scanner and the quantity of dust on them was not worth cloning out. They also seem to have acquired a yellow cast which was difficult to process out entirely in many cases.

An Ruadh-stac from Maol Chean-dearg
Day 7. The cloud-free top of Maol Chean-dearg was reached easily and such was the profusion of light that it almost rendered this Instamatic view of An Ruadh-stac sharp. ####### For two weeks every May my school took the entire third year of secondary away to locations around Scotland to engage in outdoor pursuits.
