The Black Carls of Beinn Eighe
The Black Carls of Beinn Eighe

I'm not sure what order Flickr will add this series - this is the first one with the Black Carls straight ahead. You may be able to pick out Steve (in red) and Bev (in green) who overtook me at the summit of Creag Dubh. Of course, I only saw them again way down in the corrie when I was on the scree descent.

Now I'm really in the middle of the Carls. There aren't many places to stop and put one's pack down as they are very airy and fairly exposed.

A little place of calm before the next assault! The whole point of my going up was to try and photograph the rock formations but there are few opportunities to get the camera out. This is looking back to the jagged rocks over which I had come.

The way ahead - up and over. When on the top of them, they are very airy. Do not try this if you suffer from vertigo!

The last rock-face before the summit is the only one I knew I couldn't do, so I took the by-pass path on the left. It's VERY exposed in my view and may even have been the scariest part of the whole traverse! The secret is not to look down.

Please tag your photos and upload them to the British and Irish Mountains group on Flickr

The other photos have been geo-tagged as on or around the summit. For less busy mountains, it can be a little hit and miss.

Commentary. I have enjoyed climbing many mountains in Scotland, some of them, several times. Rarely can one capture the scale, the grandeur, the humbling texture of rocks that have been metamorphosed and eroded for between 500 million and 3 billion years, almost three-quarters of the age, of this amazing planet. Awesome. Magnificent. Surreal. Moving. Dynamic. Fantastic. Many more adjectives trip off the tongue. No matter how pleasing the image, it comes nowhere near the ecstasy of being there, feeling that stunning reality, that wild, breath-taking beauty. The slope, near right, plunges almost 3,500 feet, straight down to the valley floor. Quite overwhelming. I am truly privileged to have felt this magic, so many times. I wish everyone could be there, and sense these emotions, on such a throne of the Gods. Alas, not possible…… but this, is the nearest that I can offer!
