Into the Wild
Into the Wild

Reminiscing over the classic Scottish spring flying this year, in which I saw new parts of the country as well as hitting some of my cross-country goals. This shot is taken in the depths of the Highlands near the west end of Loch Mulardoch, looking north in to the forest of Monar. The day was fantastic, with such reliable lift that there was little worry of landing in an area that would have perhaps obliged me to sleep there for the night before returning to civilisation. Flying the other wing that had just popped out of that cloud was RIchard Carter, trend-setter of British ditance cross-country flying.

A Caledonian Magnitude

A shot from last spring during one of my most enjoyable flights in Scotland, one that started in Glen Cannich and saw me exploring a swathe of Scotland's fine wilderness as far as Torridon. Here, I'm looking over to Richard Carter who I'd had my camera trained on for a few seconds before. Just as I was about to squeeze the shutter, I blinked and realised he'd dissappeared behind a whisp extending from that mass of cloud on the right. This is the shot I took as he reappeared in my view. I just love the scale of this scene, the two of us suspended above the vast moorland, 2 kilometres below us, while the clouds looks as though they are rounding on us, ready to consume us at any moment. The shot looks down on the watershed between the Ling and Beauly rivers. Any water in the bottom-left corner of this shot ends up flowing in to Loch Long, near Eilan Donan Castle, and the rest drains in to the Moray First, past Beauly.
