Mine eyes have seen the glory.....of this heavenly place, Glen Affric, Inverness-shire, Scotland.
Poem. Is it the proud, bottle-green stands of Scots Pine in the Caledonian Forest stretching back over many ice-ages, ten, fifty, a hundred thousand years? Is it the light-green, tumbledown moss-covered ground-canopy? Is it the blue patchwork of loch, river, waterfall, rapid or burn? Is it the shrill call of Siskin, Bullfinch, Crested Tit or Crossbill? Is it the bewildering fragrance of bog myrtle, heather, pine-resin and Mountain-Ash? Is it the late evening hollow echo of a Woodcock or Short-Eared Owl? Is it the regal swoop and glide or high-pitched shriek of the magnificent Golden Eagle, on the wing? Is it the dominant moan of a Red Deer stag to re-state its mating rights? Is it the vibrant golden Gorse or bright yellow Broom contrasting with the greens and blues of the fringing snow-capped mountains? No!!! It is the mercurial combination of all these elements into a rich, interwoven, living tapestry that makes this place the most amazing that I have ever seen. It lifts my spirit. It bemuses my mind. I have felt the glory of paradise, here on Earth. All the treasures this Earth can afford are here encapsulated in one view, one place, one moment. I am rich indeed, to have been here…… and here, God willing, I shall return!!!

Glorious Glen Affric at sunset, Inverness-shire, Scotland.
Commentary. The endless swathes of imperial Scots Pine. Exquisite , calm waters of Loch Beinn á Mheadhoin and Affric, convoluted by dips, hollows, bays and enchanting fresh-water islands. Lofty, imposing peaks of Càrn Eighe, Màm Sodhail and Sgùrr na Lapaich, often snow-capped, well into April, and even May. A glen of pulsating life. From Wood-Ants and Dragon-Fly to Salmon and Trout. From Red Deer and Golden Eagle to Wood-Cock and Wildcat. Iconic, momentous, overwhelming, breath-taking in early morning mists, under winter snow or in colourful Autumn garb. In Spring when Broom and Gorse smother slopes in dazzling yellow flower to Summer when green dominates and life buzzes with a frenzy. As here, in Autumn, when the sun falls earlier behind the West Coast peaks, the tranquil, golden reflections of peaks, forest and island create a sumptuous vision of utter peace, serenity and prodigious beauty. Beyond doubt, this glen has a mystical magic beyond my powers of description. If you ever go there, and catch it in a more convivial mood, you will never forget it, never regret it and you will surely return. It really is a little bit of heaven……paradise. I know nowhere quite like it. Once smitten, the love affair is likely to be eternal!

Contrasting hues of Pine, Larch and Birch as the sun sets over Loch Beinn a' Mheadhoin, Glen Affric.
Commentary. Affric has it all. Incredible trees like native Birch and Scots Pine. Dream-like islands and sheltered bays. Illustrious and majestic mountain peaks, and, as in this image, superb, sharp reflections and silhouettes against a breathless, glassy loch, as the sun sets south of west, on this autumn evening. Its ethereal qualities make for an amazing reality, that never fails to lift the spirit.

Almost perfect reflection of the setting sun's glow from the trees of Glen Affric in the waters of Loch Beinn a' Mheadhoin, Inverness-shire, Scotland.
Poem. Glorious autumn colours magnified, energised, strengthened by a setting sun. Glassy, mirror-like stillness of island-studded Loch a’ Mheadhoin. Breathless. Motionless. Silent…… but for the occasional fish jumping for insects. Trees in symmetry in an almost perfect reflection of this exquisite, lustrous, sumptuous scene. Affric is always magical. Here, now, perfection is so, so close……it is tangible, hypnotic and mesmerising.
