Morning sun gleams from the surface of Loch Hourn, a sea-loch/fjord, looking through the pine forest of its northern shore, Inverness-shire, Scotland.
Poem. Refracted morning sun gleams silver off the western reaches of Loch Hourn on the beautiful West Coast of Scotland. Fjord-like sea-lochs abound, drowned glacial valleys, mellowed over thousands of years by warmer, temperate conditions. Now shrouded in grass, heather, fern, gorse, broom and pine forest, such green and yellow glades are topped by the bare-rock remnants of a former ice-scoured past. Here looking east, the risen sun delineates mountain and pine in a pleasing glimpse, from a steep northern shore. Loch Hourn – a wildly impressive meeting-point of sea and Highland, at their best.

Loch Hourn, near Arnisdale with the lower top of Beinn Sgritheall on the left, Inverness-shire, Scotland.
Poem. Stately in its grandeur, noble slopes rising over a thousand metres are wintery, even in mid-April. This incredibly indented coastline boasts sea-loch after sea-loch, fjord after fjord. Vistas are inevitably enhanced by the vibrant colours that Scotland affords. Here, iconic silver birch, pine, and gorse provide a rich foreground. Such deep inlets can weave their way twenty, thirty, forty and fifty miles inland. Roads and settlements are infrequent. Much of the land between these sea-invaded glacial valleys is remote, grand and unspoiled. Beinn Sgritheall and Kinlochhourn Forest, in shot, is remote, wild and beautiful. Thus, its mystery, sanctity, raw appeal and utter serenity is preciously guarded.
