Riparian Alders
One of the reasons that I went up here is to look for remnants of Caledonian Pinewoods, and I saw that along the River Fechlin were deep tree filled clefts into the moorland. They are not pines, but alders, typical riparian trees in the Highlands. They hold the green in their leaves longer than most in the autumn, and can grow to considerable size. These wonderful trees have escaped the ravages of muirburn, weather, sheep and deer by hiding in these v-shaped clefts and gullies. They also show what horrors we have done to the natural landscape, removing the trees and stopping them fom regenerating.

Now would be a good time for a cup of tea.

Another sunny day. Packed sun-cream, sandwiches and lots of water & set off hoping the legs were still working OK

- Data: Database of British and Irish Hills v18.2
- Maps: We use OS mapping for England, Scotland, Wales, and the Isle of Man. Sadly, Channel Islands, Northern (OSNI) and Southern Ireland (OSI) mapping isn't available online, so we use Openstreetmap.
