Fly Past
Fly Past

As I'm descending from Derry Cairngorm, a helicopter flew through the Glen at eye level, with Beinn Meadhoin making a dramatic backdrop to the fly past. Derry Cairngorm is my first Munro I have bagged this season, my 24th in total, and stands at 1155 meters (3789 feet). This trip sees me covering approximately 20 miles by Bike & Hike and gaining 2682 feet in elevation, after setting off from the Linn of Dee outside Braemar.

Even in late May, patches of winter snow still cling to the mountainsides, this one on the slopes of Derry Cairngorm as I make my way back to Glen Derry. With Loch Etchachan in front, Cairn Gorm, after which this mountain range is named, rises into a patch of sunlight, a rare sight today! Loch and Load
Loch and Load

Descending further from the slopes of Creagan a'Choire Etchachan, a subsidiary peak of Derry Cairngorm, I get a fantastic view of Loch Etchachan and the Cairngorm Mountains. Cairn Gorm itself rises dramatically in the distance, to a height of 1245 meters (4084 feet), who's name means 'Blue Hill' and gives its name to the mountain range. Derry Cairngorm is my first Munro I have bagged this season, my 24th in total, and stands at 1155 meters (3789 feet). Across The Loch
Across The Loch

Looking across the waters of Loch Etchachan towards the heights of Ben MacDui, the UK's 2nd highest peak, at 1309 meters (4295 feet), still speckled with patches of winter snow. The water is really choppy, whipped up by the strong cold wind that has been blowing all day, but I'm making the descent from Derry Cairngorm back into the Glen, so should soon be out of it. Derry Cairngorm is my first Munro I have bagged this season, my 24th in total, and stands at 1155 meters (3789 feet). Hutchison Memorial Hut
Hutchison Memorial Hut

After descending from Derry Cairngorm, via Loch Etchachan, I follow the steep sided Glen to regain the bike I left in Glen Derry. In the distance the Hutchison Memorial Hut seems lost in the vast landscape, gently lit by a rare (for this day at least) ray of sunshine. But that's me for this trip, it's been a pleasure. Until next time ..
