Cobb's Engine house (pp,098)
Cobb's Engine house (pp,098)

This is picture records how the area around Cobb's Engine house, Windmill End, looked circa 1965. Today the area has been landscaped and trees have softened the hard terrain we see here. To the left is a hill entirely made from colliery spoil, landscaped with trees it looks natural as part of Warren's Hall nature reserve. Just behind the engine house is a blue brick bridge spanning the Dudley canal, this bridge carried a two track mineral railway and today is used an easy level walkway over the canal. Parallel with the blue brick bridge is another bridge, this bridge is now gone although the abutments are still there. The bridge carried the railway line between Old Hill and Blowers Green Junction near Dudley The line closed to passengers 15/06/1964, the line was officially abandoned 01/01/1968. Between the railway bridge and the small metal bridge visible over it is the canal Junction where Dudley number 2 canal from Selly Oak in Birmingham and Halesowen meet the Netherton arm at Bumble Hole. Today the whole area is criss-crossed with pathways and the popular café is run by volunteers from the Bumble Hole Conservation Group, it serves drinks and snacks to walkers, boaters and cyclists. Peter Shoesmith date unknown, but post June 1964. Copyright Geoff Dowling & John Whitehouse; all rights reserved
