Coire Sputan Dearg

From the upper slopes of Derry Cairngorm, and nearing its boulder summit plateau, we can look across the steep Glen to the Coire (pronounced Corrie) beyond which, hidden from view, is Ben MacDui, the UK's 2nd highest peak, standing at 1309 meters (4295 feet). We're almost at the top so need to keep going. Derry Cairngorm is my first Munro I have bagged this season, my 24th in total, and stands at 1155 meters (3789 feet). This trip sees me covering approximately 20 miles by Bike & Hike and gaining 2682 feet in elevation, after setting off from the Linn of Dee outside Braemar.

At last I gain the rocky and rather barren summit plateau of Derry Cairngorm. My destination, Derry Cairngorm's summit cairn, is in the distance so I'll have to pick my way carefully across the rocks and boulders to finally reach it. Derry Cairngorm is my first Munro I have bagged this season, my 24th in total, and stands at 1155 meters (3789 feet). Summit of Derry Cairngorm
Summit of Derry Cairngorm

At last I reach the very rocky summit of Derry Cairngorm, but not without mishap, as I stumbled and almost fell just 10 meters from the cairn. Fortunately I kept my balance but it would have been embarrassing to have to ask mountain rescue to carry me over to the cairn so I touch it before they carry me off the mountain!! Anyway, beyond the cairn we see the Glen I've cycled up, Glen Derry and the magnificent Scottish Highlands.

From the summit of Derry Cairngorm, at the cairn its top, we can see over in the distance the rocky tors that mark the summit of Beinn Mheadhoin, a Munro I did a couple of years ago. The deep Glen Derry is to the right and it's from there I have climbed to gain this altitude. Was it worth it? Damned straight it was!! Derry Cairngorm is my first Munro I have bagged this season, my 24th in total, and stands at 1155 meters (3789 feet). Summit Selfie on Derry Cairngorm

The obligatory selfie at the top of any Munro I have bagged (climbed). I don't seem to look too happy here, but it had been a tough 4 hour climb, and was blowing a very cold wind, so it was a matter of 'get a selfie and go'!! In the distance, we can see the rocky tors that mark the summit of Beinn Mheadhoin (pronounced Bane Vee-arrn) meaning 'The Middle Hill', standing at 1182 meters (3878 feet) which was my 14th Munro. While to the right is Glen Derry which I cycled up then climbed from to reach this summit. Derry Cairngorm is my first Munro I have bagged this season, my 24th in total, and stands at 1155 meters (3789 feet). Low Clouds High Lands
Low Clouds High Lands

From the summit of Derry Cairngorm in the Scottish Highlands, we should be able to see Ben MacDui, the UK's 2nd highest peak, but the low clouds mean the summit, at 1309 meters (4295 feet), is lost. Lochan Uaine lies nestled on its high slopes surrounded by the Cairngorm mountains.

Cairn and Cairn Toul

Beyond the summit cairn of Derry Cairngorm, we should be able to see the summit of the UK's 4th highest peak, Cairn Toul, standing at 1291 meters (4235 feet), but on such a dull day the summit is lost in the low clouds, along with other peaks in the Cairngorm Mountains. Derry Cairngorm is my first Munro I have bagged this season, my 24th in total, and stands at 1155 meters (3789 feet). Heading Back
Heading Back

After a short rest a litle distance from the summit of Derry Cairngorm, trying to find shelter from the cold wind, I'm heading back the way I've come. The path leads around to the left of Creagan a'Choire Etchachan, while across the Glen is Beinn Mheadhoin, standing at 1182 meters (3878 feet). To the right is the deep Glen Derry which I'll be heading back into to pick up the bike.

As I'm descending from Derry Cairngorm, a helicopter flew through the Glen at eye level, with Beinn Meadhoin making a dramatic backdrop to the fly past.
