The Halifax Bomber Memorial (Halifax bomber LW 579) Cowleaze Woods
The night of the 30th of March 1944 was one of the worst in the RAF's history. The raid on the German city of Nuremburg resulted in the highest number of aircrew losses for any single air mission in World War II. 545 airmen died on that single night. One of the planes - Halifax Bomber LW579 - successfully took part in the raid, but crashed in Aston Rowant in South Oxfordshire on its way back to RAF Snaith in Yorkshire. Now a simple memorial stone lies at the crash site in Cowleaze Wood. We've tracked down some of the relatives of the Halifax crew to bring you the story of that fateful night, bringing together relatives of the men who've never met before, and finding out why the airmen will never be forgotten in a quiet corner of an Oxfordshire woodland. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p037s842" rel="noreferrer nofollow www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p037s842

Ashton Rowant National Nature Reserve. The Chiltern's and Thames river valley
From Stoke Talmage it was a hop and a skip to Ashton Rowant National Nature Reserve and the scarp slope of the Chilterns overlooking the Thame Valley. Big open skies filled with Red kites riding the thermals, green and greater spotted woodpeckers raising and dipping over the tree line and ravens calling out over the valley slopes. With a warm autumnal sun and a cool breeze a few wild flowers still in bloom nodding their heads from grasses in the meadows.
