The Old Man Of Hoy, Orkney
2018 was the last of the three road trips I did around the Highlands & Islands of Scotland and I wasn't at this time bothered too much about the quality of my photography. So I'm revisiting a few shots to see if I can enhance them somewhat. After a lovely stay in the Ferry Inn at Stromness and booking transport on Hoy by phone the previous evening, Mike and I travelled by the ferry to Moaness on the island of Hoy. £3 each way booked us transit across the island to Rackwick via a 16-seater minibus run by the island taxi driver. Lovely chap who stopped mid route where the RSPB had a warden so we could look through their scope high up in the crags above the Dwarfie Stane at Hoy's resident pair of sea eagles. With two chicks just hatched one adult bird was out hunting for food, the other not visible. Shame. While the Scottish Central Belt was hit by heavy rain and flooding, the far north of Scotland was blessed with some lovely sunshine for the best part of the week we were there. The downside was it was being battered by severe gales. The Old Man of Hoy is located by an easy hour walk from Rackwick, however we were being battered by wind coming straight off the Atlantic. As we neared the promontory overlooking the Old Man the wind speed increased so much that it was difficult to stand up . We believe the wind speed was 80 mph plus. I was desperate to get to the nearest spot at the top of the cliffs but kept being beaten back by the sheer force of the wind. No danger of being blown off the cliffs as the wind was head on. After ten minutes of trying there was a lull of a few seconds that allowed me that essential shot. This picture here is not it as I actually prefer it to the one I struggled in the elements for.
