S9001 - Sgarbh Dubh
NR370754, LR60 & LR61. HISTORY Pillar completed 9th November 1956 costing £53.19s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NR55/T19 within the Islay secondary block, and levelled to second class precision during 1957. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in May 1979. SITE VISIT The second pillar in a three pillar circuit. Approached from the southwest. Parking for a few vehicles where the public road ends at NR302708. Up via Gortantaoid Point continuing along the coast route until it crosses a bridge over the Doodilmore River. From there the route turns towards the hill, ascends and gets easier on higher ground once above the boggy areas. Open deer grazing top. The pillar is in good condition. The spider centre retains its original OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. The flush bracket faces southeast, compass measurement 160°. Vented through the back sight hole. Full 360° panoramic view from top. Continued southeast then circled round to the southwest for the Beinn Bhreac trig.
