Spring balls - invasion of the Blobs
I took a walk to Ariundle Oakwood forest, an a remnant of the ancient Atlantic Rainforest. The tall oaks were still grey and dry in their winter nakedness but warm spring weather was encouraging new fern buds and lichens to appear on the moss covered trunks and branches o the trees. The air and humidity here is so pure that moss forms on everything including the rock boulders, with moss being around 30cm or deeper on some rocks. The moss balls form an interesting landscape amongst the trees, incredibly atmospheric in mist and fog or darkness.

A fine craic
I wasn't surprised I didn't find gold or diamonds, but I was surprised to find a big crack in the Earth. This was up the back of Ben Resipole, up the valley from Strontian. There, I found the hillside covered in crumbled white stripey rock. Black and pink stripes. Strange, when apparently these were old lead mines up here. But those miners were surprised by something else too, a rock...no, an element they had never seen before. Strontium, as was used in the manufacture of CRT television screens was first discovered here in 1790. It's the chemical element of atomic number 38, a soft silver-white metal of the alkaline earth series, and was named after the local Ardnamurchan village of Strontian. Who would have known such an earth shattering discovery could be made on this hillside?
