Poem. I don’t like all those souvenir kiosks selling “tat.” I don’t like the high-rise accommodation looming over the beach. I don’t like the crowds of people massing on the beach. Not a square metre of space. I don’t like the speeding, noisy traffic along the promenade. I don’t like the invasive speed boats and jet skis dominating the bay. I don’t like all that artificial entertainment on the pier. I don’t like the smell of commercialisation, the odour of Factor 50 mixed with hot-dogs and burgers blotting out the salty fragrance of the sea. I don’t like plastic and paper flotsam and jetsam along the strand-line instead of sea-weed. But it’s O.K. None of that is here. So I like here. It’s a wonderful paradox that Scotland’s greatest assets are its changeable weather and that brilliant insect-the midge. Without these, it would be as above. It would not be the beautiful, natural place that it is. Thank God for these “imperfections.” Our saving grace.

A magical coastline of endless beaches and Hebridean Islands, Sanna Bay, Ardnamurchan Peninsula, West Coast of Scotland.

Poem. Here, a mini-archipelago of rocky reefs and skerries are linked and bridged by sand-bar tombolos. The grey volcanic rocks, smothered in seaweed, algae and sea-shell life, alternate with warm, shallow, inter-tidal rock-pools, thronging with life. The contrasts between rock, seaweed, the turquoise shallow sea and azure deep sea, boats and yachts and the silver-white shell-sand is framed north and south by headlands, bays and alluring islands. Few explore Ardnamurchan, but those that do, know that they have found a haven, a magical place unspoiled, pristine and glorious.

Commentary. Ardnamurchan is an incredible peninsula jutting out forty miles from the mainland, into the vast Atlantic Ocean. Relatively few get as far as its western extremity, the most westerly part of the British mainland. To do so one must first enjoy a slow meander along largely single-track roads past gems like Salen Bay, Loch Sunart, Glenborrodale, Camus nan Geall, Ben Hiant and Kilchoan. Just to circumnavigate Ben Hiant involves a five-mile circuit. It is a partial remnant of a volcano that took up the whole western part of the peninsula, may well have stood 20,000 feet tall, and blew its top over 60 million years ago. The road splits just west of Kilchoan. North-West we arrive at the sensational white shell-sand bays of Sanna. Further west lies the isolated but picturesque village of Portuairk, the last habitation on the peninsula. From the lighthouse a few miles away there lies nothing but ocean, for over 3,000 miles. Ardnamurchan…… wonderfully remote, and breathtakingly unspoiled, and beautiful.
