The Good Life

Instead of Tesco. Things are different here. Smaller. Twee. As a B&B host can we say, do not take all your southern comforts for granted? Do your fuckin research before you come here! If you must insist on going on to Skye, book your ferry in advance, just as importantly as you book your flights, overnight accommodation, hire car, etc. Do not demand a whale watching trip the moment you arrive. Pre-book your adventure before you get here....to avoid the disappointment of discovering there are no whale watching trips available mainly because this area is not well known for having whales around our coast. Although, if you can get on a ferry it might be your best chance of seeing whales or dolphins. Also do not drive all the way out here and expect there to be a petrol station at the end of our drive. This is not downtown Surbiton where you can expect takeaways and nail salons all down the main drag. If you arrive with just a quarter tank you will fret while you stay here. Even if you are a French Count who drives a Bugatti, do not assume the ferries will operate just for you. It's not CalMac, it's Highland Council and they won't even answer a phone call if you want to complain. The main ferry is kaput. And it's replacement has broken down too. Don't fail to book an evening meal if you aren't cooking, because, hey ho, other people get hungry too and the few restaurants we have tend to be fully booked by late afternoon. Don't assume your phone will get a signal everywhere. Welcome to the Highlands, mate! Use EE or GPS if you want to brag about living "Your Best Life". Don't assume people are the same here as down south. Our women are hardy and wear T-shirts bearing slogans across their boobs like "Do NOT underestimate me!" or "Tough!" Don't think that a kitted out 4x4 Landrover Defender with roof tentbox and knobbly Goodrich tyres ensures you look like an adventurer: you look like an entitled, overpaid knob. The sheep that graze at the side of the road are more intelligent than you assume. Similarly wearing leather brogues, woollen hose (socks) tweed plusfours, jacket and deerstalker do not enhance your appearance in the highlands no matter how long your Volvo might be, in a Shania Twain "That don't impress me much" sort of way. The swarm of VW T5 vans mark their owners out as sheep, without wool. Windowless Ford Transits and Vauxhall Vivaro interior decorator's vans with kayaks on the roof and mountain bikes hanging off the back mark out their bobble hatted occupants as best life vegans. And bloody well learn to drive properly before you clog up our roads. Passing places are for passing and letting following traffic overtake you. BTW Scotland is not a part of England. Midges? What midges? The midges are trained to only affect tourists. Weather? No such thing as bad weather: just inappropriate clothing. And rain is just water waiting to be turned into whisky. The clouds in the sky are there to prevent us getting sunburnt. Got an issue with that too? If we didn't offer you a free dram of our finest single malt whisky it is because our first impressions on your arrival were that we don't like you. Please do not book on a "Non-refundable" deal at a lower rate and then try to cancel and get a refund 24 hours before arrival. Do not lower yourself to making pathetic, feeble excuses as to why you need to cancel. We can see through your lies. At least try to humour us with your excuses. The most amusing excuse might win a refund! But unlikely! Note, the beds in the B&B are for lying down in and not for use as a trampoline. Try not to leave embarrassing items under the bed or wet them. We have no hotel lobby, as we are not a hotel. And this is our home. Yes, some guests are actually surprised to learn we live here! Do not steal the items in the room provided for your comfort. We have your address from the booking system and will come and steal from your home. We've seen 'Taken'. You are warned! Do not complain. The booking.com system allows us to add a reply to your on-line review. And there we can have the last laugh and write what we thought of you too!
