Alvie Saved the Day
Alvie Saved the Day

After leaving Morlich we headed up towards the ski slopes then immediately back down to Kingussie and the Ruthven Barracks in search of the elusive mist. There was plenty of it around, just zero in each location we tried. We had spotted some wispy patches on our way past Loch Alvie so decided on a return. There were some mist patches still clinging to the far hills but it was the stunning colour pallete around the pretty, white Alvie church that caught my eye. Some gentle rain softened the reflections to add a painterly feel.

Precarious at Alvie

I found a position at Loch Alvie that gave me not only the sweeping vista of my previous post but also the opportunity to close in on a stand of trees nearer to the road-end of the loch. Particularly, this specimen leaning precariously (yet perfectly!) above the water made for an ideal and obvious subject. The rich colour of the dead bracken and contrasting green lichen on the branches was special enough but the mist and gentle rain added another element of interest to the image.

A view from this morning (snapped on my phone). Most of the snow that we arrived to has melted over the past week, but there’s still a bit remaining on the hilltops.
