Arkle's ridgetop pavement
Amazing rock pavement on part of Arkle's ridge crest. A fun place to spend a while, but big deep cracks between blocks and huge drops on each side give the impression it's all about to drop away one side or the other. The loch is Loch Stack.

Sunshine on the scree
Somewhere near the col between Arkle's two peaks, enjoying a burst of sunshine on one of it's slopes with Foinaven providing the backdrop.

Pipe Rock
Amongst the many points of geological interest in the area is this pipe rock which is basically quartzite with tubes of white quartz running through it.

Bank Of Cloud Along Foinaven's Summit Ridge
The chances of it remaining clear for us on Arkle were going downhill rapidly as we were going uphill un-rapidly!

In the Quartzite Mountains
In 'Explore', 2022.04.01 Exakta Varex, Ektachrome X, two original 35mm slides scanned, panorama stitching and development in Lightroom. "Quartzite is very resistant to chemical weathering and often forms ridges and resistant hilltops. The nearly pure silica content of the rock provides little material for soil; therefore, the quartzite ridges are often bare or covered only with a very thin layer of soil and little (if any) vegetation." On Arkle
Exakta Varex, Ektachrome X, original 35mm slide scanned, digital development in Lightroom. According to one source quoted in Wikipedia, the name could originate in the Norse ark-fjell, "flat-topped hill". How this fits in with the name given on the Norwegian page "Den flate åsen" I don't know. Old and new languages, perhaps? Certainly, here in Sutherland, South-land, Suðrland, the Norwegian heritage is evident. For Norwegian Vikings, this land was in the south. nn.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkle" rel="noreferrer nofollow nn.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkle en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkle_" rel="noreferrer nofollow en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkle_ (Sutherland) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutherland" rel="noreferrer nofollow en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutherland en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norsemen#/media/File:Old_norse,_ca_900.PNG" rel="noreferrer nofollow en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norsemen#/media/File:Old_norse,_ca_...
