Lighting Lapaich
I shot a couple of wide panos looking down Glen Affric, bordered to the right by the impressive Sgurr na Lapaich. However, despite its size, the mountain looked a little lost at the edge of the frame so I decided to try zooming in a tad. With the sky continually changing I was hoping for some direct light on the hill but this subtle brightening of the facing early Spring snow was as good as it got.

Autumn Snow at Affric
We moved from our initial lochside position to the lower slopes at the head of Loch Affric. It was bitingly cold up here and we had to spend quite some time waiting for the light to strike both the lower trees in their autumnal coats and the more distant peak of Sgurr na Lapaich at the same time. The relatively thin snow covering on the lower ground allowed for some vegetation and rocks to remain visible and consequently made for a more interesting, contrasty foreground than we would have had with a thicker white blanket.

Down the Glen
Haven't made it out this weekend so another re-visit to last weeks trip. This postcard-pretty vista is taken from our lofty viewpoint at the head of Garbh-uisge looking past Affric Lodge (owned by Pippa Middleton's husband's family) and down Loch Affric to the snowy mountains behind.

Autumn Colours in Glen Affric.
Commentary. West to east, Affric is one of a “triumvirate” of superlative glens, dissecting the North-West Highlands, Strathfarrar, Cannich and Affric. Affric is sublime. Partially drowned for Hydro-Electric Power in the 1960’s its slopes still glow with the oranges and golds of bracken, heather and birch. For over thirty miles dark-green swathes of Scots Pine, remnants of the once mighty Caledonian Forest, pulsate with life along the lower slopes of the imperious mountains and deep valleys. Lochs and reservoirs bristle with bays, peninsulas, beaches and enchanting islands. Many, regard it as one of Scotland’s most exquisitely beautiful glens, and I, for one, would not disagree.
