The peak of Luinne Bheinn is silhouetted against the skyline beyond Lochan nam Breac, in the rugged heart of the Rough Bounds of Knoydart. Thursday June 2, 1988. A digital copy of a 35mm Kodachrome 64 film transparency. Nikon FM, 35 - 70mm f3.3 - f4.5 Nikkor F-series lens. My journal for the day records: 'Wind rose during night and rain increased. Slept fitfully, checked water level outside tent at about 01:30 and again at about 05:00. Rising, but well below tent. Waterfalls loud. Wind SW, on front of tent, stood up very well. Rain heaviest around 7 - 8 a.m. Sunny periods by about 11:30. Walking around outside, my eye was caught by a moving shadow as an eagle soared over the crags behind tent. Joined by its mate, the pair soared up along the ridge of Ben Aden. A fine sight. Afternoon of sunshine and showers. Sun came out and wind dropped after one particularly heavy, short, sharp shower. Lighting was superb, took several photos of Luinne Bheinn. Evening drier, but weather still does not look settled, much cloud still, moving from more southerly direction, some shower clouds still around. Midges troublesome again. Haven't seen a soul all day, no-one. Nice.'

Lochan nam Breac, Knoydart, Inverness-shire. My Vango Hurricane tent is just visible where the stream enters the loch to the left of the sandbank. Wednesday June 1, 1988. A digital copy of a 35mm Kodachrome 64 film transparency (cropped). Nikon FM, 35 - 70mm f3.3 - f4.5 Nikkor F-series lens. My journal for this part of the trip (abridged) records: 'Day 5, Tuesday 31st May. Ugh! Rained most of night, morning dawned cloudy, damp and windless, perfect midge weather. Conditions quite photogenic, but midges made staying outside intolerable. Rained on and off throughout day, quite steady and heavy in afternoon, breeze started up and kept worst of midges away. Still drizzling as I write this, cooking paella with prawns. No obvious sign of better things tomorrow, but here's hoping' 'Day 6, Wednesday 1st June. Rose at 06.30 to sun breaking through, loch was like polished glass, not a ripple. Midges voracious. Saw a heron flapping lazily across the loch further down. Fish jumping or surfacing everywhere. Luinne Bheinn in cloud. Rain started mid-morning, on and off. Photographed a large dragonfly newly hatched, drying its wings. Eagles soaring high over Sgurr a Choire-bheithe. Midges very bad in evening, weather turning worse, real Scotch mist, drizzle, rain, wind, cloud. Ugh! Looked pretty set in as I retired to bed.' My plan had always been to camp here for a few days, in the hope of climbing some of the surrounding hills; in the event the weather made that impractical as I was never going to see very much in the clouds and mist. A return visit the following year was a lot more successful.
