Fionn’s Rock (Prayer Hands), Innerwick, Glen Lyon, Scotland
An early morning visit into beautiful Glen Lyon to try and capture a sunrise at this mysterious rock formation. Fionn's Rock is also known as “The Praying Hands” said to have been split in two by an arrow fired by the Celtic hero Fionn MacCumhaill, the legendary Scottish warrior often referred to as Fingal. The stones are approx’ 200 mts above the floor of the Glen and are roughly 3 mts tall. A grand vantage spot. © All rights reserved

Praying Hand's of Mary, Glen Lyon. Scotland.
My wife (79) and myself (81) made the walk up the Glen to visit these iconic stones, a wee bit of a trek and not the nicest of day's for walking out in, but we'll worth the trek.

Sunrise on Glen Lyon is a composite image I created, using a preset, a drop in sky and some sunrays, all created and edited within Luminar Neo………and all experimental of course, I know adding and deleting objects into a photo may not be to everyone’s taste, but I look upon it as a “Wet Day” photo editing challenge……….comments most welcome on composite photography!!!!!!

The Praying Hands, Glen Lyon. Scotland.
Sir Walter Scott once described Glen Lyon as the longest, loneliest and loveliest glen in Scotland, how true he was, as near to the hamlet of Camusvrachan within the glen, lies a cluster of old stone cottages at Balmenoch where you can venture up Gleinn Da-Eigg and eventually encounter one of the glens most striking rock formations, “Fionn’s Rock” or “The Praying hands of Mary” This was my autumnal excursion to see and photograph them for the first time, and I was amazed at the beauty of not only the stones themselves but the view they commanded looking right down Glen Lyon itself. Spectacular to say the least.

The "Praying Hands of Mary" Glen Lyon. Scotland.
My Wife and Son at “Fionn’s Rock”, where some people believe it to be a glacial erratic deposited during the Ice Age, but the precision of how the stone is placed makes this unlikely. Another theory is that the stone was raised by humans in the Neolithic period, but if this was the case their purpose is a complete mystery. An old Celtic story has it that an arrow fired by the Ledgendery Celtic hero Fingal from “Creag nan Eildeag” a nearby hill split the stone in two….. So, Erratic, Neolithic, or Legend…….it’s your choice, it’s still an imposing view.

Fionn's Rock, Glen Lyon
I was really only going to return to this location at sunrise or sunset, but was in Glen Lyon and thought it was worth a visit at midday with heavy cloud and glimpses of sun. The roads were busier than usual but incredibly the parking area at Camusvrachan was clear. Beats walking in from Bridge of Balgie like I did the first time! Warm for walking with a load of gear but a comfortable temperature for mooching around at the rocks. Even had a doze for a while, with one eye on the light, when the camera was set up. Probably here for about two hours - the sky, background hills, and lighting on the rock changed moment by moment, and for about 20-30 seconds in total the rock lit up against a darker background in exactly the "right" way. "Waiting for the light" was worth in in the middle of the day after all. My only company during the wait was a bird of prey calling from the hill above. After getting the shot I crossed the burn to the hydro scheme track, hoping to get a more distant shot of the rock from the other side. Not today, but the low hill opposite could be a good sunrise/early location. No doubt that I'll be back.

Eroding Glaciated Antiform (2)
Also known as the Fionn's Rock or the Praying Hands of Mary; a very well-known landmark in Gleann na Eildeag off Glen Lyon. A serendipitous photo: I've made other photos here, often with a particular well-known composition; this time, seen afresh in winter snow, as I was picking up the camera, the view on the LCD fell into place, its contrast catching my eye. Instant favourite. I even still like it after processing the results, too... :) Prints and things are available from the website: www.shinyphoto.co.uk/photo/Eroding-Glaciated-Antiform--2--b3bdee3225f6631c6cdee1dfae6fac16" rel="noreferrer nofollow www.shinyphoto.co.uk/photo/Eroding-Glaciated-Antiform--2-...
