A walk along the beach at Arnside, Cumbria
A walk along the beach at Arnside, Cumbria

We paid a visit yesterday to Arnside on the south bank of the River Kent, intending to walk along the beach with our little Yorkie as far as the Coastguard post. Then we were going to call in at the lovely little cafe behind it and have a drink and a quick bite to eat. Evie the Yorkie remembered it well and bounded up the steps. But it was to no avail. It had closed and was up for sale. It was a very pleasant walk with a somewhat sad ending.

This is part of the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The River Kent rises in the fells near Kendal and flows into the north-eastern part of Morecambe Bay a couple of miles from Arnside. Across the other side of the Kent Estuary is the seaside resort of Grange-over-Sands.

We have had some lovely weather this week up in the north-west of England. After first calling in to Morecambe to do some shopping, we eventually ended up at Arnside, on the coast of south Cumbria. We then walked along the beach, enjoying the scenery and the pleasant spring weather.

The village of Arnside, Cumbria
The village of Arnside, Cumbria

Arnside is a pretty little village in South Cumbria that sits at the side of the estuary of the River Kent. This joins Morecambe Bay about a mile away, and in effect it makes Arnside a seaside resort. Although it is well off the beaten track, it is increasingly popular with visitors. There is a stone pier with seats providing a lovely view of the estuary and the railway viaduct that takes the Furness Line across the river. There is also a delightful riverside walk.

An unusual sight on the Arnside Viaduct, Cumbria

The Arnside Viaduct, which crosses the River Kent in between Arnside and the Furness area of Cumbria, carries the Furness Line, which runs between Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness. It also provides part of the route to our massive nuclear re-processing plant at Sellafield on the western coast of Cumbria. The train on the viaduct has powerful diesel engines front and rear and looks to be carrying very heavy and specially strengthened containers for nuclear materials. I once saw one of these being tested in a high-speed crash to demonstrate its total resistance to damage. The engine was completely wrecked, by the way. If anyone can cast further light on the train, do please leave a note.
