NH678198, LR35. HISTORY Original pillar completed 14th October 1936 costing £24.7s.3d. Computed as primary triangulation station PP356 within Figure 6 of the OSGB36 Primary (retriangulation) of Great Britain) network during 1951. Levelled to second class precision in 1956. Last maintained by the OS in August 1993. SITE VISIT Overall approach from southeast. Parked in car park by end of public road at NH711180. Followed mapped tracks to NH679176, then random route in near straight line via peat bogs etc. High open moorland top. A cylindrical Vanessa pillar occupies the site of what must originally must have been a standard Hotine pillar. Although the original pillar had been completed in 1936 the Vanessa design did not come about until c1958. The date of this later rebuild is not on record. Remains and parts from former Hotine including the vertical pipe, two of the four sight pipes, two angle irons and various bits of painted concrete are scattered nearby. Vanessa in good condition with repairs at ground level. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces north, compass measurement 353°. Vented through east sight hole with north and south breaking open, bolt photographed. 360° panorama to surrounding Monadhliath Mountains and beyond.
