The imposing slopes of Glencoe reflect in the waters of Loch Achtriochtan, Argyll, Scotland.

Commentary. Most heralded, stark and infamous of valleys. The northern and southern slopes produce an outstanding symmetry in this shallow reed-laden lake. What devilish, deadly deeds were committed where “X” marks the spot, treachery and massacre. And yet, for all its credentials, to chill the blood with gruesome acts, even when the clouds and temperature fall, the sheer awesome magnificence of this place can not be overstated. THIS IS GLEN COE!

The house. Sunrise catches mountains, flora and the shallow waters of Loch Achtriochtan in Glencoe, Argyll, Scotland.

Poem. Is this a lonely house? It is isolated. It is alone. But is it lonely? Well that depends! For me, no. For others, yes. For me – I can be lonely in a huge city, surrounded by lights and sky-scrapers and people and traffic and business. Cities can be cold and heartless and self-centred and isolating. Only greed and self-satisfaction to feed the soul. In this house I could be part of a family, a family of people and a family of spirits. The spirits of the mountains, lakes, streams, plants, trees and rocks. Here I feel at one with nature, with God’s creative hand on a timeless landscape. I feel at peace with my place in a far bigger picture than a city. The city has been here for milliseconds. The valley has been here for countless eons. It is here that I feel complete!

Mountain reflections in Loch Achtriochtan, Glencoe, in late summer, Argyll, Scotland.

Commentary. Some observers talk down Glencoe, perhaps because of its popularity and high visibility. One sees pictures of it constantly. It has become a symbol of Scottish scenery. Perhaps familiarity breeds contempt. I agree that certain images of it are over-played. But having viewed it from many angles I still have to defend its aesthetic appeal. In all conditions, and in many visits it has never ceased to “rock my world.” It IS grandeur…… at its rawest, most rugged, brutal and un-forgiving. It affronts you. It stands proudly, uncompromisingly, bolt upright and fills your senses. It demands your attention. It is an awesome, glacially eroded cleft in the Scottish Highlands that cannot be ignored. The result of a subsidence caldera 420 million years ago. It has the Commander-in-Chief of mountains. Glencoe is a grand-icon of immense proportions and impact.
