The Long Drag
Well, ‘crawling up that hill’ might be more accurate! 60048 'Eastern' crosses Ais Gill Viaduct with coal, possibly for Eggsborough Power Station, on 26 September, 1997. The train is nearing the summit of ‘The Long Drag’, a continuous climb southbound from Appleby with a ruling gradient of 1 in 100, reaching an altitude of 1,167ft at Ais Gill.
