Commentary. For many years Butser Hill was renowned for being the site where history enthusiasts re-created an Iron-Age settlement in reverence to the fact that such hills have produced much archaeological artefacts that prove occupation for thousands of years. The views in all directions are extensive but this is an image looking due south. Dry Valleys, wooded glades and the distinctive rounded grassland bluffs with all its calcium-loving flora and fauna. Butser has one more claim to fame. In the episode of “Only Fools and Horses” called “Tea for Three,” Del cruelly turns a sunbed setting to maximum whilst Rodney has fallen asleep under it. Rodney ends up with a face looking like a rosy apple. Del, as usual, takes great delight in boasting about his fictitious jumps as a paratrooper to an old friend. From this, Rodney’s revenge is born. Unknown to Del, Rodney hatches a plan to get his friend to allow Del to do some hang-gliding next time they meet. Del can’t lose face and refuse but on the day Rodney assures him that just before he takes off he will receive an imaginary emergency telephone call from their 3-wheel van. Del trusts his brother, but of course when Del expects the call it never comes and he has to take off as Rodney wishes him a “Good sun tan.” It doesn’t end well but is very funny. And yes, the hill in question is Butser Hill!
