Cultural landscape soft and hard
Meanings of many eras are tied to the land. Some features are durable, like the ones made of stone or brick. Others are ephemeral like seasonal events (harvest, holidays, accidents) and leave little trace for archaeologists or forensic experts to decode. In-between the hard and the soft features visible on the landscape, there are things that are semi-durable: structures of wood or metal, dried (not baked) adobe, or temporary by design (yurt or teepee or hunting camp). Learning to read the various historical (and prehistorical) times brings to life the fullness of the surroundings, whether the traces are plain to see (like this photo) or are noticeable only in the right lighting conditions (like contours and crop marks). This photo near the north flank of Pendle Hill and the road to the village of Barley in Lancashire is along a farm access road that leads to the footpaths up the side of the mount. The walls that stand here could be former laborer dwellings or long-ago barns. Press L for lightbox (large) view; click the image or press Z for full image display. Hover the mouse pointer over the image for pop-up remarks.

This is OS mapping. In some areas, OpenStreetMap shows more footpaths
Spatial NI has online OSNI mapping. Click "Basemap Gallery" (4 squares icon at the top).
Now would be a good time for a cup of tea.

The other photos have been geo-tagged as on or around the summit. For less busy mountains, it can be a little hit and miss.

- Data: Database of British and Irish Hills v18.2
