Zig and zag
Alongside its Cumbrian and Derbyshire neighbours, the Dales is famous for endless miles of dry stone walls. Criss-crossing the green pastures that host so many sheep, they divide the land and were an important tool for the development of farming systems, local communities and the agricultural economy. The can also provide lots of compositional opportunities to landscape photographers and painters. They can provide lead in lines, frame subjects, and host lichens and mosses that compliment and contrast their gritty rock textures.

Folds
Occasionally, a landscape photographer is blessed with cloud cover containing intermittent breaks that allow beams of sunlight to come down and illuminate small patches of the Earth. These natural spotlights offer two especially appealing tools to the photographer, high contrast and a method to isolate subjects. As we descended the western flanks of Wether Hill, the lunchtime cloud cover started to break and the sun projected such spotlights onto the opposing Dodd Fell which moved predictably as the clouds crossed the sky. As we walked, I observed the golden beams advancing towards interesting buildings, trees and other interesting subjects. As each made its final approach towards such subjects, I'd stop briefly and capture handheld exposures.

Higher Sleddale
Wether Hill, also known as Drumaldrace, is a large limestone hill typical in shape others in the Dales. It separates Raydale and Wensleydale and a Roman road, Cam High Rd crosses east / west connected Bainbridge to Ingleton. It offers wonderful views along Wensleydale and over Semer Water to which we walked a couple of days before this picture was taken.
