The Yorkshire Dales from the Howgills, Cumbria
A week in Cumbria staying in Shap, followed by a long weekend in Cartmel. Our first walk took us to the Howgills. Starting in Sedbergh, we headed up to Calders. We descended by Cautley Spout.

Cautley Spout.
Has the distinction of being the highest falls in England falling in a broken cascade a distance of 198m. Easily reached from the Cross Keys Inn, food exceptional, on the Sedbergh road the A683.

Cautley Spout.
England's highest cascade waterfall. Drops 198m. down the almost shear face of the Calf at the head of a stunning glacial valley. Not at all in keeping with the Howgills, a group of fells situated between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District noted for rounded slopes and gentle gradients.

Looking back to the Cross Keys.
Cautley Spout down to the right. Where the stream, Cautley Holme Beck, meets the River Rawthey and slightly left is Low Haygarth and the Cross Keys, a temperance hotel with a fascinating history and very good food. Not always open!
