Martindale at Dale Head
Dale Head is just over the brow of the hill past the barn in the distance. The road stops there and the path continues over the fell to Boredale Hause and Ullswater.. A quiet corner of the Lakes and a deer forest. The mid C18 was the time for replacing wooden barns with the more familiar stone buildings, Field barns like the one in the picture are probably mid C19 Some however are even earlier than the C18 and an examination of the inside can give clues to the age of construction. Recommend R.W. Brunskills book, Vernacular Architecture of the Lake Counties.

Martindale.
The Nab is to the right and the Bungalow to the left, red building. Built in 1910 by Hugh Lowther to entertain the German Kaiser on a shooting holiday. No running water or electricity. Maintained by the estate and now a holiday let.
