Roman Road
The Sarn Helen / Sarn Elen Roman Road named after the wife of Magnus Maximus who reputedly caused the road to be built. This road was the Roman equivalent of the motorway, linking the most important Roman settlements and industry between Segontium, (Caernarfon), in North Wales and Nidum, (Neath), in South Wales. This section of road is on the ridgeway of Hirfynydd in West Glamorgan and is bounded by an 18th or 19th Century dry stone wall and, more recently, forestry. Rome's troops were generally expected to walk 15 to 20 miles in a day so forts or settlements were never further apart than this. In this instance Coelbren fort & marching camp was approximately 13 miles from Nidum fort, (Nidum meaning 'the nest'). Magnus Maximus, Macsen Wledig in Welsh, was the Commander of Britain and ultimately embarked upon a campaign to become Emperor in the West. Elen or Helen was, by legend, the daughter of a Brythonic Chieftain. Their combined bloodline filtered down into the royal families of Wales and most Welsh people could count them as ancestors. Sarn = causeway, (indicating the fact it was built up, probably to cross the boggier sections on the route). This ancient byway is lamentably neglected by the local authority who appear quite intent upon dissuading public use and access.

The road less travelled
Rutted remote forestry track in the Dulais Valley. I'm guessing it's been quite a few years since anyone has taken a cart or a Land Rover along this route.
