A view from the highest point in Co. Monaghan, a small rise to the east of the summit of Slieve Beagh (the summit itself being in Co. Fermanagh). This is looking north west across Lough Sallagh, which is divided between Monaghan and Tyrone. The large windfarm in the distance is on Murley Mountain, between Fivemiletown and Fintona, Co. Tyrone.

Monaghan, a small rise sometimes known as Slieve Beagh East Top. On the right is Lough Sallagh; the border between Monaghan and Tyrone runs up the middle of the lake.

Some of the walkers on the Boots N Bogs hike up Slieve Beagh on 20 April, hosted by Knockatallan Ramblers. This was taken after heading downhill from the highest point in Co. Monaghan. Here we were very close to the Three Counties Hollow, a depression where Counties Monaghan, Tyrone and Fermangh meet. I'm just not sure which one we're in here.

Three Counties Hollow (or The Foolishness of Borders)
Three Counties Hollow (or The Foolishness of Borders)

This unassuming depression close to the summit of the remote Slieve Beagh hills is so named because it marks the meeting point of Counties Fermanagh, Tyrone and Monaghan. It therefore also forms the border between Northern Ireland (Tyrone/Fermanagh) and the Republic (Monaghan). The spot is marked by the meeting of the fences and by the yellow-painted sticks - the latter seems to be a more recent addition. At the time I'd thought I was taking this from Co. Tyrone but later realized I'm in Fermanagh.

Lough Sallagh 2
Lough Sallagh 2

Lough Sallagh is the highest of the numerous loughs located in the Slieve Beagh hills which straddle Counties Tyrone and Fermanagh in N. Ireland and Co. Monaghan in the Republic. This Lough is one of several divided by the border in this area, being split between Tyrone and Monaghan. It is home to two rare species of beetles!
