Newark on Trent, Nottinghamshire
Newark Castle Newark Castle was founded in the mid 12th century by Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln. Originally a timber castle, it was rebuilt in stone towards the end of the century. The castle was partially dismantled in the 17th century as a result of the English Civil War, and restored in the 19th century, first by Anthony Salvin in the 1840s and then by the corporation of Newark who bought the site in 1889. The castle sits in a prominent position in the town over looking the River Trent.

Town lock, Newark on Trent
In 1772 an Act was passed to improve the River Trent. Locks were built in Newark which led to it becoming an important and busy inland port. The lock was extended in the 1830s. To go with the increased industrial demand there was a need for warehouses and wharves, but as industry declined again in the C20th the area became unused. The area has now been restored and buildings converted into housing.
