10127 - Grange Fell
NY244819, LR79. HISTORY Pillar completed 30th July 1958 costing £35.12s.9d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NY29/10 within the Lockerbie secondary block, and levelled to second class precision during 1959. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in June 1977. SITE VISIT Drove up the forest track as far as a locked gate at NY236829 and parked in a recess. Followed the mapped track southeast. The track has been severed by the expansion of the quarry but the route can still be walked with care. After the track ends, numerous grassy firebreaks lead up to the top where other firebreaks meet. The flattish summit is not immediately easy to find amongst the growing conifers. The pillar is in good condition. The spider centre retains an OS cap with deep indented lettering. The flush bracket faces WSW, compass measurement 289°. Vented through the right (southeast) sight hole. Just a few metres from the trig stands a 3ft tall mystery concrete object resembling a skinny trig. Photographed: 12th June 2008, GRP. ═════════════════════════ Interactive index: www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1arx2Qmo5mVeVUJA2lzVG_uzbYPW59ffh&ll=55.126062,-3.186955&z=12" rel="noreferrer nofollow Google My Maps Map: www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/30020901788/in/album-72157692190778971/ Trig Pillars on OS Landranger 79 ═════════════════════════ Neighbouring Triangulation Pillars www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8114086699/in/album-72157631831281682/ S9847 - Risp Hill : 1.79 miles to the southwest. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8114095480/in/album-72157631831281682/ S9840 - Blackwood Ridge : 3.37 miles to the south. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8117257272/in/album-72157631838876970/ 10234 - Corrie Common : 3.54 miles to the northwest. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8098058680/in/album-72157631793900484/ S6562 - Bloch : 3.56 miles to the east. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8114086603/in/album-72157631831281682/ S9897 - Ewe Hill : 4.17 miles to the northeast. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8114096256/in/album-72157631831281682/ S9831 - Whitcastle Hill : 4.44 miles to the north. ═════════════════════════
