Loganair Britten-Norman BN2B-26 Islander G-BPCA at North Ronaldsay airport
Loganair Britten-Norman BN2B-26 Islander G-BPCA at North Ronaldsay airport

Mamiya 6MF, Mamiya G 50mm f/4L, Ektachrome E100SW, digitised by photographing the original 60mm transparency on a light pad; tethered capture in Lightroom. Taken just after landing on a flight from Kirkwall. This aircraft (now 35 years old) is still serving North Ronaldsay and other Orkney islands; on 2021.03.17 it flew the same route as pictured here, Kirkwall to North Ronaldsay. "The Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander is a British light utility aircraft and regional airliner designed and originally manufactured by Britten-Norman of the United Kingdom. Still in production, the Islander is one of the best-selling commercial aircraft types produced in Europe. . . . The Islander has been in production for more than 50 years." "As of 2016, Britten-Norman claim that the Islander is in daily service with roughly 500 operators in more than 120 countries. Between 1976 and 2006, Scottish airline Loganair operated a number of Islanders as air ambulances, covering areas such as the island communities in the Hebrides. The Islander services Loganair's Westray to Papa Westray flight, the shortest scheduled flight in the world at 1.7 mi (2.7 km); the scheduled flight time including taxiing is two minutes. . . . By October 2019, 800 Islanders were in service including around 600 used for short flights." Landing on North Ronaldsay
Landing on North Ronaldsay

Mamiya 6MF, Mamiya G 75mm f/3,5L, Ektachrome E100SW, digitised by photographing the original 60mm transparency on a light pad; tethered capture in Lightroom. Taken just before landing on a flight from Kirkwall. Prominent is a part of the dry stone wall which encircles the island: "The North Ronaldsay or Orkney is a breed of sheep from North Ronaldsay, the northernmost island of Orkney, off the north coast of Scotland. It belongs to the Northern European short-tailed sheep group of breeds, and has evolved without much cross-breeding with modern breeds. The semi-feral flock on North Ronaldsay is the original flock that evolved to subsist almost entirely on seaweed – apart from the marine iguana, native to the Galapagos Islands, it is the only land animal known to have such a diet. They are confined to the foreshore by a 1.8m drystane dyke, which completely encircles the island, forcing the sheep to evolve this unusual characteristic. The wall was built in 1832 as kelping (the production of soda ash from seaweed) on the shore became uneconomical. Sheep were confined to the shore to protect the fields and crofts inside, and afterwards subsisted largely on seaweed." (Wikipedia) At the moment of taking this photo., the tide was high and so the sheep were ruminating - not feeding - on the grass, as may be seen. At low tide, they move out to feed on the seaweed. Their diet gives the meat a very distinctive and pleasant character, as I can personally testify! Also in the photo. are the modern lighthouse and the Dennis Head Old Beacon (far right). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Ronaldsay_sheep" rel="noreferrer nofollow en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Ronaldsay_sheep en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Ronaldsay" rel="noreferrer nofollow en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Ronaldsay en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orkney" rel="noreferrer nofollow en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orkney de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orkney" rel="noreferrer nofollow de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orkney
