10536 - Stob Na Cruaiche
NN363571, LR41. HISTORY Pillar completed 20th May 1959 costing £9.3s.1½d. Computed by Distomat survery as tertiary triangulation station NN44/DM/2 within the Rannoch Muir secondary block, and levelled to second class precision during 1959. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in July 1982. SITE VISIT Parked at Rannoch Station. Followed the estate track west to roughly NN398570, then up through woods then via open moor to aim for bealach, and along the county boundary to the summit. The Vanessa is in good condition. The spider centre is open. The flush bracket faces southwest, compass measurement 233°. Vented through the front (SW) and right (SE) sight holes. Spectacular 360° panorama over a wilderness to a mountainous skyline. This really is in the middle of nowhere, good weather conditions are essential to fully appreciate the surroundings. The distomat stations were only fixed by observing distances and not angles, unlike other stations that were fixed by angle and distance methods.
