10243 - Blackhope Scar
NT315483, LR73. HISTORY Pillar completed 3rd August 1958 costing £52.3s.3d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NT33/T2, and levelled to second class precision during 1959. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in May 1970. SITE VISIT Overall approach from SSE. Parked on the verge, by the west side of the B709 just north of entrance to Leithen Lodge at NT328423. Up via Black Law (S9830) then from the junction of tracks at NT311436, continued on the track to the NE to NT318451, onto a path to a higher level track at NT320456, followed that to NT317461 onto open hill where I recorded this as a waypoint on my GPS. Continued to the top on a near direct route through deep heather negotiating peat hags and deeply dug drainage troughs. The trig column stands on the Peeblesshire side of the boundary fence, while the land to the west of the junction of fences is the county top of Midlothian and the highest ground in the Lothians. The pillar is in good condition. The spider centre is plugged with tar. The flush bracket faces ESE, compass measurement 117°. Vented through the left (SW) sight hole. The extensive 360° panoramic view includes Scald Law, Allermuir Hill, Edinburgh Castle, West Lomond, Arthurs Seat, East Lomond, North Berwick Law, Traprain Law, Lammer Law, Windlestraw Law, DunRig, Culter Fell and Broughton Heights. Photographed: 15th July 2015, GRP. ═════════════════════════ Interactive index: www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1arx2Qmo5mVeVUJA2lzVG_uzbYPW59ffh&ll=55.723598,-3.091677&z=12" rel="noreferrer nofollow Google My Maps Map: www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/43595282831/in/album-72157692190778971// Trig Pillars on OS Landranger 73 ═════════════════════════ Neighbouring Triangulation Pillars www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/7905058828/in/album-72157631347423092/ S3089 - Dundreich : 2.57 miles to the west. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/7905059432/in/album-72157631347423092/ S3082 - Torfichen Hill : 3.33 miles to the northeast. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8114096342/in/set-72157631831281682/ S9830 - Black Law : 3.90 miles to the south. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/7905059866/in/set-72157631347423092/ S3078 - Toxside Hill : 4.17 miles to the northwest. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8117257692/in/set-72157631838876970/ 10132 - Carcant Hill : 4.38 miles to the northeast. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8114087733/in/set-72157631831281682/ S9836 - Mount Main : 4.47 miles to the east. ═════════════════════════
