Cairnsmore of Dee
Cairnsmore of Dee (1,617 feet) ( www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/9471408451/in/photostream/ www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/9471408451/in/photostr... ) is a surprisingly rugged little hill in the Dumfries and Galloway region of south-west Scotland. Its dome-shaped summit is the highest ground between Clatteringshaws Loch and Loch Ken but as it is surrounded on all sides by conifer plantations it is not an easy hill to get to. The hill takes its name from the River Dee (sometimes also referred to as the Blackwater of Dee), which is located to the south of the hill. The name is Gaelic in origin and means “Big Hill of Dee”, although this name has only come into use relatively recently and on older maps it is referred to as Black Craig (“Black Cliff”), an amalgamation of English and Scots. Broad ridges descend eastwards, southwards and westwards from Cairnsmore of Dee. The west ridge leads down to a subsidiary top called Benniguinea (1,270 feet), where there is a telecommunications mast. It is this ridge that provides the easiest route of ascent up to Cairnsmore of Dee. The route starts from the visitors centre car park beside the A712 road at Clatteringshaws Loch. A service track leads up through the forest to the telecommunications mast on Benniguinea, beyond which the pathless west ridge may be followed without difficulty up to the summit. During the ascent there are particularly good views north-westwards over Clatteringshaws Loch towards Merrick ( www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8296756815/in/set-72157632759122808/ www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8296756815/in/set-7215... ) and the Rhinns and Kells ( www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8603974401/in/photostream/ www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8603974401/in/photostr... ), and south-westwards towards Cairnsmore of Fleet ( www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/9437908879/ www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/9437908879/ ). NX583757, LR77. Cairnsmore or Black Craig of Dee. HISTORY Pillar completed 26th March 1955 costing £33.11s.0d. Computed by Distomat survey as tertiary triangulation station NX56/DM/T10 within the Kirkcudbright secondary block, and levelled (height to top of pillar) to second class precision during 1958. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in June 1988. SITE VISIT Cairnsmore or Black Craig of Dee. Approached from the NW. Parked at NX568770 in an unmapped short track off the south of the A712, midway between the two unclassified roads off the north side. Battered through challenging forestry to a track parallel with A712 then battered through more forestry to open hill. Followed a near straight line to the summit which also proved very challenging due to strong random tussocks of varying depth. The pillar is in good condition. The spider retains its original OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. This column was built without a flush bracket. Vented through two open sight holes; south (175°) and east faces. Full 360° panorama from the top.
