Millfore
Millfore (2,156 feet) is quite an aloof hill and is seldom visited by hillwalkers. It is one of the Minnigaff Hills of south-west Scotland and is located 7.5 miles north-east of the town of Newton-Stewart, in the administrative region of Dumfries and Galloway. The name Millfore is most probably derived from “Mull Fhuar”, which is Gaelic and means “Cold Hill”. Millfore lies within the Galloway Forest Park and is the highest point of a broad undulating ridge. The ridge runs for just under 5 miles in a south-westerly direction, from the River Dee, near Craigencalle House, to Drigmorn, near Auchinleck. Strictly speaking, the ridge is no more than a continuation of the “Rhinns of Kells” ridge ( www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8603974401/in/set-72157632759122808/ www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8603974401/in/set-7215... ), which is much more popular with hillwalkers and runs for another 11 miles in a north-easterly direction beyond the River Dee. The shortest approach to Millfore (6.2 miles there and back and only 1,634 feet of ascent) starts from Black Loch, which is situated beside the old Edinburgh road, just north of the Wild Goat Park. A dirt track leads up to the loch from the A712 road at Craigdews and just before the eastern end of the loch is reached there is a large space off the track where cars can be parked. The route then follows the track around the north end of the loch and up to the col between Millfore and Poultrybuie Hill. From there, the broad south-east ridge of Millfore leads up to the summit, where there are superb views northwards into the heart of the Galloway Forest. Merrick ( www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8296756815/in/set-72157632759122808/ www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8296756815/in/set-7215... ), the highest point in southern Scotland, dominates the view to the north-west and to the north-east it is possible to view the entire length of the Rhinns of Kells ridge. To the south, the eye is drawn towards the huge bulk of Cairnsmore of Fleet ( www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/9437908879/ www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/9437908879/ ), and beyond that lies the Cree estuary and the coastline of Wigtown Bay. The picture was taken looking north-eastwards towards Millfore from Black Benwee Hill, on the south ridge of Curlywee ("Hill of the Wind") ( www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8571944625/in/set-72157632759122808/ www.flickr.com/photos/67668518@N08/8571944625/in/set-7215... ), above Auchinleck.
