In 1831 an amazing discovery was made on Uig beach - 93 carved chess gaming pieces, dating from the C12th – C13th, believed to be from 4 chess sets. Carved from walrus and sperm whale ivory, they were probably made in Trondheim, Norway. Looking at the height of this life size carving, you could be mistaken for thinking the real thing are the same, but actually they are only 60 – 100mm tall. As well as chess, some of the pieces could also have been used to play the game of hnefatafl where the object of the game is for a king to reach a corner of a board before being captured. The Lewis hoard also contained pieces for playing the game “Tables” which is similar to backgammon. Now only usually on display at the National Museum of Scotland and the British Museum, 6 have been loaned to the Lews Castle museum. Being iconic they have featured in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone” and the “Lewis Trilogy” by Peter May and statues can be found dotted around Lewis.
