Long view landscape The Snow Roads ( www.visitcairngorms.com/inspire-me/snowroads/" rel="noreferrer nofollow www.visitcairngorms.com/inspire-me/snowroads/ ) Scenic Route is a 144-km (90-mile) journey which takes you from the picturesque market town of Blairgowrie to the traditional Highland town of Grantown-on-Spey. The route traverses the highest public road in Britain taking you through some of the most outstanding landscapes in the eastern Cairngorms. The road links the communities of Braemar, Ballater and Tomintoul with a range of natural and cultural attractions. Three stunning Scenic Route Installations provide new opportunities to stop and explore this wild and beautiful highland countryside. A Cairngorms photo-post is also located at each installation to allow you to capture changes in the landscape. With such a range of activities for families, explorers and sightseers alike, take your time to relax with an overnight stay or two in your choice of accommodation along the way and stop at one of the many cafes and restaurants to sample some highland hospitality. Travel the scenic way on the Snow Roads North or South with the opportunity to link to many other areas in Scotland including Royal Deeside, the Malt Whisky Trail or the North Coast 500. The Snow Roads are slow roads. Take your time to enjoy the views, villages and attractions along the route. You will experience steep hills, ‘blind’ summits, tight bends and single-track roads in part so be sure to drive with care and courtesy. On narrow sections, please be aware of other drivers and use passing places to allow others to go by safely and continue on their journey. www.visitcairngorms.com/plan-your-visit/about-the-cairngorms-national-park/" rel="noreferrer nofollow www.visitcairngorms.com/plan-your-visit/about-the-cairngo... Commentary. Like Braemar, Ballater is a traditional Highland town in the Cairngorms National Park. These “Royal” towns are notable for their pink and grey granite-stone Victorian cottages with dormer windows. Ballater is smitten with Royal Crests signifying that the Royal Family frequent the retail establishment. They range from butcher, baker and candle-stick maker to Outdoor and Rural Supply shops. Balmoral Castle is only a few miles west of Ballater. As in this image the town enjoys several green, open spaces and the River Dee flows south and then east, at the eastern end of the town, under yet another sturdy, arched, granite bridge. Coniferous forests smother most of the encircling hills. Of particular interest is the Victorian railway station. Built to last and re-painted regularly it must look little different from when Queen Victoria visited. The Deeside towns have a well-kept and ageless dignity, that is hard not to admire.
