11094 - Ben Aigan
NJ309481, LR28. HISTORY Early records for these Lossiemouth Base Extension pillars are unclear but this pillar may have been built by 1912. This marker was added to the OSGB36 primary network and was computed for triangulation as primary station PP348 in Figure 3 of the Retriangulation of Great Britain during 1937. This station was also used for the reconnaissance of secondary block NJ45 (Elgin) in 1953. The pillar top was levelled to second class precision in 1953, concurrent with the reconnaissance of neighbouring secondary block NJ45. Flush bracket 11094 was installed on 27th July 1963. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in May 1981. SITE VISIT Approached from the northeast. Used the forest car park at NJ333491. Followed the mapped forest track to NJ322489. From there a steep westerly running path cuts the long route and rejoins the track at NJ318490. It is easier to continue with the mapped track network all the way to the summit rather than cutting across boggy moorland. Lossiemouth style column on heather clad top. The pillar is in fair condition. The spider retains an OS cap with deep indented letters. The flush bracket faces southwest, compass reading 212°. Vented through the back (NE) sight hole. The full 360° panoramic view includes Knock and Ben Rinnes between heavy showers. Distant Mountain.
This is the start of a lovely walk up to Ben Aigan in Speyside, Scotland (this is looking down the path and that isn't Ben Aigan in the distance). It is a relatively easy 4-5 miles there and back, the majority of it on Forestry Commission tracks. The view from the top is a wonderful 360 degree panorama.
