OS Map of Beinn Tart a' Mhill

S3679 - Beinn Tart a' Mhill
NR210569, LR60. HISTORY Pillar completed 12th May 1946 costing £26.7s.6d. Computed as primary triangulation station PP383 within Figure 6 of the OSGB36 retriangulation network during 1951. This station was also used for the reconnaissance of secondary blocks NR55 (Islay) in 1957, and NM52 (Mull) during 1960. Levelled to second class precision in 1957 along with the triangulation of the neighbouring secondary and tertiary pillars of secondary block NR55, Islay. Last maintained by the OS in May 1979. SITE VISIT Visited without incident. Approached from southwest. Parked in extended passing place, east side of road at NR189560. Entered mapped farm track via Kelsay, passing to the south of the main farm house, to the north of the smaller dwelling to the east, then rejoining the track which climbs all the way to the comms mast. A walk of 250m to the ENE leads to the summit. Open grazing top. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces southwest, compass measurement 236°. All sight holes buried but a finger test revealed the back port open. Sadly the 360° panorama from this primary station was lost to poor visibility on the date of visit.
