S8726 - Beinn Bheigeir
NR429564, LR60. HISTORY Pillar completed 5th October 1956 costing £78.4s.3d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NR55/3 within the Islay secondary block, and levelled to second class precision during 1957. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in June 1979. SITE VISIT This is the highest summit on the island of Islay. Approached from the southeast. Road end car park at NR462538. The first part of the route is ambiguous and the maps could do with updating. However once you have negotiated a route (tussocks, bogs etc) onto open hill at NR455542, a defined path climbs the obvious route up the shoulder of the main hill, and it is then a good walk all the way to the summit. The pillar is in a wind shelter and is in good condition. The spider retains its original OS centre cap with large narrow raised letters. The flush bracket faces southeast, compass measurement 115°. Vented though the right sight hole. The full 360° panoramic view includes Jura and mainland Kintyre. Photographed: 14th May 2023, GRP. ═════════════════════════ Interactive index: www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1arx2Qmo5mVeVUJA2lzVG_uzbYPW59ffh&ll=55.733189,-6.095385&z=12" rel="noreferrer nofollow Google My Maps ═════════════════════════ Neighbouring Triangulation Pillars www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/52919746547/in/album-72157631821839859/ S8849 - Ardmore : 4.44 miles to the southeast. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/52920786508/in/album-72157631831281682/ S9004 - Beinn Sholum : 4.48 miles to the southwest. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/52078700851/in/album-72157631831281682/ S9002 - Beinn Dubh : 4.54 miles to the north. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/52088038365/in/album-72157631831281682/ S9007 - Coil A Ghuail : 4.59 miles to the northwest. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/52920713970/in/album-72157631821839859/ S8855 - Cnoc Rhaonastil : 4.90 miles to the south. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/52087539351/in/album-72157631821839859/ S8999 - Cnoc Donn : 5.79 miles to the west. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/52923099640/in/album-72157631831281682/ S9082 - Beinn Na Doire Leithe : 6.29 miles to the north. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/52087564878/in/album-72157631821839859/ S8998 - Cnoc Grianail : 6.58 miles to the west. ═════════════════════════

The other photos have been geo-tagged as on or around the summit. For less busy mountains, it can be a little hit and miss.
