Loch Sween between Crinan and Tayvallich at low tide in a dawn silence and serenity, Knapdale, Argyll, Scotland.
Commentary. The shallow, parallel sea-channels in Argyll are interspersed by countless stands of commercial spruce and some original, ancient small oak woodland, near the shore. Home to deer, otter, raptors, countless species of woodland birds and the re-introduced beaver, this area is a naturalist’s paradise. Off the beaten track, peace and tranquillity favours wildlife and humans alike. Here, the Argyll sea-lochs are narrow, wooded and sheltered. Calm waters for sailing and mooring abound and often the forested slopes are mirrored in breathless stillness giving near symmetrical reflections of stunning beauty.

Mirror-image reflections of Loch Sween and forest in a silent, still, early morning image, Argyll, Scotland.
Commentary. Between Crinan and Tayvallich in the Knapdale Forest lies Loch Sween and Caol Scotlish sea-lochs, home to vast coniferous plantations and Atlantic Oak woodland. The flora and fauna are abundant on these steep, rocky linear hills or “knaps” with sea-submerged “dales,” between. From a vast array of bryophytes, liverworts, mosses and fungi to Red and Roe deer, Wildcats, Golden Eagle, Osprey, Red Squirrel, Pine Marten and the recently re-introduced European Beaver. Maerl beds, anenomes, oysters and Volcano Worms inhabit the many inland miles of water-channel or “dales.” Offshore, near islands like Scarba, Jura and Islay live a wide variety of Cetacea from Dolphin and Porpoise to Minke Whales and Basking Sharks. It is truly a nature-lovers Garden of Eden. Here, the north-east to south-west tree-covered “Knaps” are reflected in the glassy, still waters of Loch Sween. Lush, verdant, green tones contrast brilliantly with the golden shoreline seaweed, and the peace and tranquillity is overwhelming!

Home to deer, otter, raptors, countless species of woodland birds and the re-introduced beaver, this area is a naturalist’s paradise. Here in a dawn light the purple Rosebay Willowherb contrasts starkly with the golden seaweed, bottle-green pine plantations and milky-grey reflections of the sky in this serene, sheltered Argyll sea-loch.
