S8568 - Beinn Ghuilean
NR726177, LR68. HISTORY Pillar completed 17th November 1955 costing £38.5s.5d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NS04/2 within the Isle of Arran secondary block, and levelled to second class precision during 1956. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in September 1978. SITE VISIT Approached from the north. Parked outside the cemetery by the road at NR728194. Headed along the track outside the north edge of the cemetery. Headed across fields as the undergrowth permits to the track, then followed a steep path to high point at NR720185. Finally, took a near straight line SE up to the summit. The pillar is of sound structure but mindless vandals have seen fit to score their initials into three of the faces. The spider centre had a tar plug but that is broken open. The flush bracket faces east, compass measurement 79°. Vented through three sight holes, port hole on the FB face is still plugged. The full 360° panoramic view includes Arran, Ayrshire, Ailsa Craig, Sanda, Ireland, Islay, Jura, and much of southern Kintyre. Returned via NR729189, this route is not recommended, the undergrowth on the lower slopes is a vicious combination of brambles, thorns and gorse. Photographed: 1st July 2012, GRP. ═════════════════════════ Interactive index: www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1arx2Qmo5mVeVUJA2lzVG_uzbYPW59ffh&ll=55.400436,-5.591541&z=12" rel="noreferrer nofollow Google My Maps ═════════════════════════ Neighbouring Triangulation Pillars www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8498176201/in/set-72157631821839859/ S8566 - Island Davaar : 2.39 miles to the northeast. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8511939830/in/set-72157631821839859/ S8562 - Gartloskan Hill : 2.77 miles to the southwest. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8498175831/in/set-72157631821839859/ S8564 - Knock Scalbart : 2.80 miles to the north. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8495612341/in/set-72157631821839859/ S8572 - Ballivulline Hill : 3.88 miles to the north. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8511939690/in/set-72157631821839859/ S8544 - Tirfergus Hill : 3.89 miles to the west. www.flickr.com/photos/13460108@N06/8511939626/in/set-72157631821839859/ S8565 - Cnoc Odhar : 4.72 miles to the southwest. ═════════════════════════
